Assessment and Development centres frequently use behaviour simulation exercises to attempt to simulate various aspects of the job.  Candidates are observed and measured according to how well they deal with the various situations.  These methods can have high validity-but it is essential to ensure that your simulations accurately reflect the main components of the job.

Behaviour simulations include exercises such as in-trays, work samples, group exercises, role plays and presentations.

Advantages:

  • Fair and objective method of assessment – all candidates are exposed to the same simulations and are rated according to specified competencies (skill areas)
  • A wide range of information is available – all the competencies should be assessed, some in a variety of ways.
  • Seen by candidates favourably as giving them a good opportunity to demonstrate competencies.
  • They are job relevant
